SAMARAHAN: SMK Tarat ended its gold drought at the 9th MSSM Samarahan Track and Field Championship by capturing seven gold medals as the inter-school athletics meet entered its second day at the Samarahan Mini Sports Complex yesterday.

The golds were delivered by the school’s athletes including record breakers Phang Pei Xia (Girls U-14 discus) and Meltie Martin (Boys U-18 discus) and together with three silver and three bronze medals they won, SMK Tarat went on top of the medals table.

In a close second was SMK Sungai Tapang who won six gold, seven silver and one bronze while third spot was occupied by SMK Muara Tuang with a haul of four gold, four silver and nine bronze.

Fast rising SMK Tebedu was in fourth with four gold, four silver and two bronze.

SMK Sri Sadong dropped from fourth position to fifth with three gold, six silver and three bronze while joint hosts SMK Taee and SMK Sadong Jaya ended in eighth and 11th placing after winning three gold, two silver, one bronze; and two gold, one silver respectively.

First day leaders SMK Sebuyau could not maintain their momentum to plunge to tenth position with three gold, one silver and two bronze.

Eight hundred and twenty-three athletes from 20 secondary schools are participating in the championship that will end tomorrow.

The main objective of the event is to select representatives for Samarahan at the MSS Sarawak Track and Field Championship in Sibu from Apr 17-20.
