Fun-filled days at Pesta Rakyat Durin

SIBU: Hundreds from Sibu town and nearby longhouses thronged Durin Bazaar for Pesta Rakyat Durin organised by the Durin community last weekend.

Various games, stalls and stage performances turned the quiet town into a joyful and lively place.

Many came as spectators, and many others participated in various games and competitions during the two-day event.

The games included water racing, duck catching, pig catching, lorry pulling, tug-of-war, eating competition and sepak takraw.

Despite the rain on Saturday night, many still turned up with umbrellas to watch the beauty pageant (Miss Durin).

Viviana was crowned Miss Durin, walking away with RM350 cash, a trophy and sash.

Nana and Shirley Teo in second and third place received RM200 and RM100 respectively.

They also each received a trophy, hamper and other prizes.

Shirley Teo won the Miss San Yan Han subsidiary title, Miss Friendship was Tanya Sayom, Miss Photogenic Caroline while Miss Best Costume Wendly Huang. They each received RM70.

The first day event ended with fireworks at almost midnight.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Saturday morning, gues of honour CCK Group chairman Datuk Tiong Su Kouk said the event was a good platform to promote harmony and peace among the races.

“This is truly the community of Malaysians where diverse races come together to celebrate the festival,” he pointed out.

Tiong personally contributed RM10,000 to the event which portrayed the 1Malaysia concept.
