Women cook up a storm at cooking challenge

KUCHING: Eleven women had a showdown to find out who cooks the best Bubur Pedas at the 2nd Annual Bubur Pedas Cooking Challenge on Sunday.

The popular Sarawak dish is a spicy rice porridge specially cooked for breaking of fast during the Ramadan month.

The event was hosted by Kubah Ria Complex and sponsored by SEDC PPES Ternak Sdn Bhd, Gas Petronas and Maggi.

“The objective of this cooking contest is to encourage chef wannabes to showcase their cooking skills and while promoting Sarawak’s popular delicacy – Bubur Pedas,” said Sara Urusharta Sdn Bhd event and PR executive Ida Athanazir.

“As we have seen many celebrity chefs and Master Chef programmes on TV, it’s all about cooking creativity and fun. We hope this cooking contest will serve as a platform to recognise our own homegrown chefs and that they will excel to become celebrity chefs of the future.”

Apart from Bubur Pedas, participants had to prepare a second dish, either Curry Beef or Black Pepper Beef.

At the event, SEDC PPES Ternak Sdn Bhd provided fresh beef, Maggie provided its packet ingredients while Petronas Gas sponsored the cooking gas, aprons and headgear.

The top three winners for the contest are Hajijah Dan, 61, Faujiah Husain, 49, and Rokiayah Dan, 62, who won electrical applicances, Maggi hampers, SEDC PPES Ternak hampers, Lotus Five Star Riverside Cineplex movie passes and Parkson gift vouchers.

Consolation prizes went to Parida Maideen and Dayang Maziatul Akmar.

The Best Presentation was by Dayang Maziatul Akmar who received a RM100 Parkson gift voucher for her effort.

Meanwhile PPES Ternak, the main live livestock supplier for Qurban and Akikah in Sarawak, will be holding a Hari Raya promotion two weeks before the festivities.Its livestock comprise cows, goat and deers.

PPES Ternak is the biggest fresh beef and venison supplier in the state through its retail store Sarabif and other sales agents.

Sarabif offers festive hampers which include fresh meat to be given as gifts to family, friends and corporate gifts. It is priced from RM200 to RM450, including delivery within Kuching.
