KUCHING: Sarawak Archery Association (Permasa) have expressed satisfaction with the recently concluded 16th Sarawak Outdoor Archery Championship.

Permasa vice-president Bong Jiew Khiun told thesundaypost yesterday that the competition was made merrier with the participation of Sukma state shadow teams from Kelantan, Penang, Selangor, Sabah and Melaka.

“We were serious in organising this tournament as we wanted to make it a national event this year… hence we invited a few state teams to come here to Sarawak and compete,” he said.

Apart from the five state teams competing, six other teams representing divisions or clubs also competed in the tournament organised at the SMK Tabuan Jaya from April 23 – 27.

Bong was also pleased with the performances of the state Sukma archers.

Although failing to win the overall championship title, they got valuable experience just before travelling to Perlis for this year’s Sukma by the end of this month.

“It was a good opportunity for the local and state archers to have an exposure here in Sarawak as they need not travel far this time around.

“They gained precious experience last week competing against archers from the other states,” he said.

He also thanked Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan who officiated the opening and closing ceremony respectively.

Team Kelantan were crowned overall champions after winning the most medals.

They clinched the Snowdan Lawan Challenge Trophy.

A total of seven distances each of Recurve and Compound bows were contested for both men and women during the tournament.

Sarawak archers won four gold, four silver and five bronze medals.
