KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has introduced five initiatives to help local contractors expand their business opportunities in residential renovation works.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the first initiative, through the CIDB National Accredited Renovators (CNAR) programme, was the new B28 category registration of CIDB contractors for residence renovation works.
“The second is for the local government to issue renovation permits for eligble CIDB contractors and the third is to standardise terms for contractors doing renovation and minor projects.
“The fourth is to publish guidelines on residence renovation and the distribution of a directory on Bumiputera Contractors and Renovation Works 2014/2015 for the public,” Fadillah said this at the launch of the ‘Programme on Strengthening Bumiputera Renovation Contractors’ through CNAR programme here yesterday.
At the function, CIDB, Works Ministry, Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Ministry and Malaysian Malay Contractors Association also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The MoU aims to encourage Bumiputera contractors to be accredited as renovation contractors and grab business opportunities in the renovation sector.
Until November 2014, Fadillah said, 3,905 contractors were registered with CIDB under category B28 with 90 per cent of them being Bumiputera contractors.
“I believe that with the initiatives, the number of illegal and foreign contractors, who are not registered can be reduced.
“I call upon Grade G1 or Class F Bumiputera contractors, who make up 70 per cent of the total number of registered contractors, not to depend on government contracts and be active in the open market for the residence renovation segment,” he said. — Bernama
