KUCHING: The Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) Clinical Research Centre (CRC), with first-in-man research facilities, is scheduled to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak next month.

A first-in-man study is a clinical trial where a medical procedure is tested on human subjects for the first time following in vitro, animal or mathematical modelling testing.

SGH senior consultant cardiologist Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the centre is the first of its kind under the Health Ministry and possibly the first in the country.

He said with the facilities, Sarawak will be able to join

other world-class research centres in contributing to the development of new drugs as well as bringing the latest drugs to the people.

“It is a hard-fought but worthwhile centre for the people,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

The centre’s foundation stone was laid in September 2007 and it was recently completed at a cost of RM50 million.

Dr Sim added that the potential returns would be far more.
