SIBU: Express boats here will operate as usual to destinations classified as green zone despite Sibu returning to yellow zone status after it recorded a Covid-19 positive case, says Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi.

He pointed out that the movement restriction to areas categorised as different coloured zones had been lifted but stressed that the standard operating procedures (SOP) needed to be fully adhered to.

Hatta said when asked if express boats could ply to destinations such as Kapit, which is a green zone, after Sibu slipped into the yellow zone from its initial green zone status.

“Proceed as usual. The restriction on the movement on different colour zone has been lifted. SOP to be observed fully,” Hatta told The Borneo Post.

Sarawak recorded one new Covid-19 positive case today, bringing the cumulative total tally to 571, said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the latest Covid-19 positive case was reported in Sibu.

He said that this changed the status of Sibu from a green zone to a yellow zone.

Meanwhile, Hatta revealed that the Sibu Express Boat Terminal handled 1,207 passengers, of which 646 were arrivals and 561 departures on June 27.

As for RC Pontoon Wharf, 251 passengers passed through the facility, of which 134 were from arrivals and 117 were departures, he added.

Express boats plying the upper reaches of Rajang River berthed at Sibu Express Boat Terminal, whereas those heading to downriver destinations such as Daro, Bruit, Igan, Passin and Mupong berthed at RC Pontoon Wharf.
