KUCHING: A blood donation campaign by Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations(SFCA) of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions, and Tay Motors in collaboration with Malaysian Red Crescent Sarawak (MRCS) and Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has registered overwhelming response with 2,565 donors since June 1.

“During Movement Control Order (MCO) period, blood collection dropped by 40 per cent. Now that postponed cases have been called up, SGH needs an average of 70 pints per day,” stated SGH head of Transfusion and Blood Bank Services Department, Dr Mohammad Masrin Md Zahrin when met after presenting letters of appreciation to donors and sponsors with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng at the MBKS Dewan Masyarakat here yesterday.

He shared that SGH selects, recruits, processes, tests and distributes blood needed to its network of five district hospitals and five private hospitals. He said the hospital’s blood bank needs continuous support to ensure sufficient blood stock and hoped the campaign would register 2,700 donors by June 30.

Meanwhile, Wee lauded the community’s effort for achieving the highest number of blood donors from a single donation centre.

“This shows that there are many caring people in Kuching especially blood donors and sponsors,” said Wee.

Also present at the event were owner of Tay Motors Aaron Tay Kok Tung and MRCS director Chai King Sing.
