LIMBANG: Assistant Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail has called on relevant agencies here to find a solution to mitigate flash floods that often occur during heavy rainfall.

He said while waiting for comprehensive studies to be done, agencies such as the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and the Limbang District Council (LDC) must play their respective roles.

“Flash flood is unavoidable, but our drainage problems need to be addressed.

“For long term measures, DID needs to conduct comprehensive study on the drainage system in Limbang especially in Limbang town whereas for short term measures, they need to carry out river cleanup activities as clogged rivers and drains can cause flash floods,” he said.

He was asked to comment on flash flood issues in Limbang, the most recent of which occurred last Thursday when the heavy downpour caused rainwater to overflow onto several roads.

The Bukit Kota assemblyman also said as long term measures take some time to be implemented, LDC should take immediate measures to clean up clogged drains so that rainwater can flow quickly and easily.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Limbang, flash flood prone areas in Limbang include those along Jalan Pandaruan and Jalan Kubong and the junction of Kaban River and Kampong Limpaong.
