SIBU: The recent ceremony to mark the handover of duties between outgoing commander of the 31st Infantry Brigade, Brig-Gen Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng, and Brig-Gen Sarman Bahrom, was quite subdued compared with those that had been held previously.

This was due to strict compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), pertaining to the running of events and gatherings amidst the present Covid-19 situation.

Nevertheless, the handover-of-duties event was still a meaningful one for Lim, who took over from Maj-Gen Datuk Fadzil Tajudin back in 2018.

“I will be transferred back to Putrajaya to serve as a senior directing staff at the National Centre for Defence Studies.

“In simpler terms, a senior directing staff is somewhat similar to a senior lecturer or a university fellow.

“It has been a great tour of duty in Sarawak, and I am glad to have been able to contribute towards maintaining security at the borders, through many operations such as Ops Benteng and most recently, Ops Penawar/Covid-19 in Bintulu and Bau, together with members of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),” remarked Lim, who would report for duty in Putrajaya this July 1.

He also expressed his ‘big thank you and appreciation’ for the support that he had received over the years, and he hoped to return to Sarawak again in the future.

Lim had served as the brigade’s commander, based in Camp Junaco here, from Oct 1, 2018 to June 17 this year.

Sarman, on the other hand, was the chief-of-staff at the Army Training and Doctrine Command (Tradoc) Camp in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
