SIBU: Police have arrested a man who allegedly shot his 18-year-old son during a drinking session at their house in Kampung Keranji in Selangau on Tuesday.

Mukah police chief DSP Jimmy Panyau said the 48-year-old suspect was nabbed at a longhouse in Stapang around 7.25pm the same day.

“We also earlier recovered a homemade shotgun, believed to have been used in the incident, not far from the suspect’s house.

“The suspect will be remanded for seven days until Aug 11 to facilitate investigation,” he said yesterday.

According to Jimmy, the incident occurred after an argument broke out between the father and son during a drinking session.

“Angered by his son’s behavior towards his family, the suspect allegedly grabbed a homemade shotgun and fired at his son before fleeing the scene.

“The victim suffered serious injuries to his left shoulder, fingers and right knee but was otherwise conscious,” he said, adding the victim was first sent to a health clinic in Selangau before being referred to Sibu Hospital.

Police are investigating the case under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, as well as Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing or carrying arms and ammunition without a licence or permit.
