Yellow lines demarcate lot for Dayak traders to sell their jungle/seasonal produce.

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has demarcated 13 (previously) non-trading lots at Sunday Market here into smaller lots to accommodate more Dayak traders to sell their seasonal produce, says councillor Albert Tiang.

Tiang, who is the Market and Petty Traders Standing Committee chairman, said this was done following the many requests from Dayak traders wishing to trade at the weekend market in Jalan Indah.

They, however, said they could only trade there perhaps, once or twice in a month, selling jungle produce, he added.

“The 13 lots measuring 10’ by 10’ each are non-trading lots due to their proximity to a shophouse, which obstruct the business of hawkers trading at the shophouse. After the demarcation, it can now accommodate 15 smaller stalls, each measuring 10’ by 4’ without obstructing the shophouse business.

“It is the council’s way to encourage more traders from the Bumiputera community to trade at the Sunday Market,” Tiang said when contacted yesterday.

He said the demarcation process was completed yesterday. As for three additional stalls situated at a non-strategic location, the council will rent them out as kiosks for companies/individuals who wish to carry out promotional activities, he added.

There are about 130 traders at the weekends market.

“Over 200 applications have been received to trade at Sunday Market. Those still on the waiting list will be offered a place if an existing trader decides not to operate anymore,” Tiang said.

The council has also readied two mobile toilets for the convenience of visitors.

The Sunday Market began operations at its new location (Pasar Tamu Indah) on Aug 1, after it was relocated from Jalan Mahsuri.
