Spas, reflexology centres in Sarawak start petition to be allowed to operate

KUCHING: Spa, reflexology and wellness centre owners in Sarawak are appealing to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to allow them to operate during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) which is being enforced in the state until Jan 31.

In an online petition put up by account holder, May Then on Change.org, the group asked to be fairly treated.

“We, the legitimate spa, reflexology and wellness centre owners in Sarawak plead with the SDMC to demonstrate mercy and fair judgement for our respectable holistic industry.

“Our customer charter is the same as the physio, beauty, hair and nail sector’s (which involves physical contact) but yet those businesses are permitted to open as usual under the CMCO.

“We don’t want to be unfairly judged. We don’t want to operate in fear of being instructed to close. We don’t mind to close when all similar industries are doing the same. We want it fair,” it said.

The petition that was put up Wednesday has so far collected more than 500 signatures. Under the CMCO, spas and reflexology and wellness centres are not allowed to operate.

They stated that their businesses had never created any (Covid-19 infection) cluster since the last reopening after the MCO, adding that they were constantly observing the standard operating procedure (SOP) by wearing a mask and face shield during their services.

They also said that they had voluntarily done the Covid-19 screening test several times and the results were all negative but sadly, due to misperception, the sector had been classified as ‘entertainment’.

“We desperately appeal to the SDMC to hear us out. We welcome feedback from the public to strengthen our proposed SOP, because we care for everyone’s wellbeing,” the group said. — Bernama
