MIRI: Members of public should use social media as an alternative channel to develop a sense of community living.

Parti Bersatu Sarawak (PSB) Pujut branch chairman Bruce Chai said there are many ways the people can assist the government to further improve the living environment at their neighbourhood.

“As long as the people feel convenient, they may use social media channels for them to create a sense of community service,” he said yesterday.

He was commenting on PSB Pujut branch’s call for public support to enhance road safety in Miri by reporting any potholes sighted in the city and sharing the pictures through Pujut Residents Facebook page as an alternative platform.

Chai, who is a former councillor of Miri City Council (MCC), said such initiative is mainly to assist the relevant authority to rectify the potholes issues in the city, thus ensuring the safety of road users.

He pointed out that potholes and the sinking of manhole covers were quite common in the city, when the road is undergoing resurfacing works.

During the road resurfacing works, he noted that there were many times that many manhole covers were not lifted up, which caused them to sink when many vehicles went over them and caused damage to vehicle tyres and posing danger to motorcycle and bicycle users.

“Some may see the potholes matter as a petty issue but it could result in fatality or injury to the road users.

“As Miri is such a big area to cover, we can play our part by assisting the relevant authority and let them know the location of the potholes so that they can rectify the problem immediately. That is why I’ve created such initiative so the people can have more avenues for them to highlight the potholes issues to prevent untoward incidents.”

Since the initiative was started two weeks ago, he said response from the people on the effort was very good, and information on potholes reported by the people had been forwarded to the relevant authority for further action.
