KUCHING (Mar 2): The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) should be praised for their swiftness in implementing the state’s Covid-19 immunisation programme, said Tupong assemblymman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.

He said as many as 8,323 individuals in Sarawak had already been administered the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine since the vaccination programme was launched last week.

“This achievement mirrors the enthusiasm of the state level committee in breaking the Covid-19 chain in Sarawak. The decision to vaccinate at least 70 per cent of Sarawakians by August this year is practical in relieving the stress on hospitals and medical centres in our state,” Fazzrudin said in a statement today.

SDMC advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian had revealed in a Facebook post that 8,323 individuals from nine divisions had been vaccinated in Sarawak in three days beginning last Friday.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had also told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday that Kuching topped the list of districts with the most vaccinations at 1,677 people, followed by Sibu with 1,360 people.

Meanwhile, touching on the state government’s decision to purchase their own Covid-19 vaccines, Fazzrudin said that this step taken by SDMC was proactive.

“This is a contingency plan to support the available supply (of vaccines) from the federal government.

“I believe that SDMC will also get advice on this matter from Sarawak Covid-19 Vaccine Advisory Group which is led by Prof Datuk Dr Andrew Kiyu Dawie,” he said.

He also urged Sarawakians to continue abiding with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“Even though the Covid-19 immunisation programme is underway, the community should not be lax on abiding with SOPs. In fact, this new norm should be practised until it is really safe,” Fazzrudin stated.
