KUALA LUMPUR: “The key is to keep focused on improvements.” That has been the mantra of former eight-time world squash champion Datuk Nicol Ann David.

Sharing her journey to success, Malaysia’s Queen of Squash said even after winning the world title, she never once felt like she knew everything.

“I always felt I have something to improve; I had my support team right by my side to make sure every small detail was measured and refined every time with my coach. I never once felt I was entitled to anything in my life and that’s the reality of it,” she said at the Global Mentoring Walk 2021 held virtually yesterday.

Organised by the Women Entrepreneur Network Association Malaysia (WENA) with the support of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry and the United States Embassy, the event attracted more than 190 participants nationwide.

Nicol said having a strong mindset is also important to keep one on track.

Concurring with her view, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi said believing in oneself is the most vital aspect in life to build resilience in facing challenges.

“Get up, show up and be there. I realise that there is nobody who is going to change things in life except me, myself and it took a year for me to (adapt) and live as a disabled.

“You would face challenges in life and it would get frustrating sometimes but always keep a positive mindset,” she said.

Ras Adiba said overcoming her disability was no mean feat as she had to endure six years of unemployment due to her injury while she struggled with depression.

Apart from being the first woman chairman of Bernama, the veteran television personality is also the president of OKU Sentral, a non-governmental organisation championing the rights of persons with disabilities. — Bernama
