KUCHING (June 23): The new St Peter’s Church in Padungan here will be able to accommodate over 1,000 parishioners upon its completion next year.

A press release from project architect Architect DesignPractice said the original design plan in 2014 by the late architect Yong Nyan Ted began as a single-storey building to seat up to 800 parishioners.

The design was then expanded and in 2017 the new building design featured a new facade to make the structure even more distinguished and majestic.

With a team of architects to work on the details of the church, the building features tall roofs, pointed arches, and spires which showcase its gothic-inspired design.

A unique detail of the church is the rose window made of stained glass, which portrays the image of Jesus’ life is designed to allow light to flood into the church.

The masterplan of the development also includes a multipurpose hall and a hostel.

The new St Peter’s Church will be the first gothic designed church in Sarawak, and will become a landmark in the city of Kuching.

The first phase of the project, the St Peter’s Columbarium, which can accommodate up to 5,000 urns, was completed in 2018.
